I found a great blog with a vintage recipe for Civil War "Maccaroni Cheese." Since I just finished writing an Antebellum Era Romance, "Protecting Miss Jenna," I had to share this recipe here! I can really see Jenna's family enjoying this dish together! "Gran" would have made it in the kitchen and browned it at her large, stone, kitchen fireplace.

I had no idea they made this dish back then! Apparently it was featured in "Godey's Lady's Book." It's only one sentence long, so many variations of this recipe could occur. According to Elise's family food blog, "Simply Recipes," the magazine said this:

Boil the maccaroni in milk; put in the stewpan butter, cheese, and seasoning; when melted, pour into the maccaroni, putting breadcrums over, which brown before the fire all together.

Elise mentions some spices she believes they would have used, and also explains that Thomas Jefferson was a fan of macaroni and cheese. To find out more about what she writes in her awesome blog--

Vintage birthday cake recipe & an Excerpt from "Hannah's Garden: a Turn of the Century Love Story"

Aunt Olivia responds to Hannah's complement regarding her 18th birthday cake in the following passage:

"Thank you dear!  It's easy to make.  Just sweeten oh... about a pint of cream with white sugar, grate in some lemon peel; whip that into froth.  Then pour a pint of thick cream into a china dish, lay a sponge cake in thin slices over it, then a layer of some kind of jelly.  I used blackberry jam because I prefer it with sponge cake when I'm not in the mind for orange marmalade.  Then you pour the whipped cream on top and our what remains in the bottom of the dish.  It's as simple as that.  Oh and you can garnish the rim with sweetmeats but I used strawberries instead."

Hannah had never been happier.  It had nothing to do with the cake or the many gifts her family had lavished upon her-- and everything to do with how much joy and fulfillment God had brought into her life.  She opened the presents with a smile, knowing her Father in heaven was looking down on her, watching over her every need, and even some of her wants.
